Shimoga
India officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous liberal democracy in the world. India is a union of twenty-eight states and seven federally-governed union territories. New Delhi is the capital of India. Shimoga is the previous name of the place Shivamogga, a city in Karnataka. Shivamogga a town and a city municipal council, is located in the central part of the state of Karnataka, India. It lies on the banks of the Tunga River and is the administrative headquarters of the district. The name of the city is derived from the term Shiva-Mukha, meaning Face of Shiva. An alternative etymology is that the name is derived from the term Sihi-Moge, meaning Sweet Pot. It has an average elevation of 569 metres. Shimoga is located about 274 kilometers from Bangalore and is an important industrial and commercial center of the state. As of 2001 India census, Shimoga had a population of 274,105 inhabitants. The males constitute 51 percent of the population and females 49 percent. Shimoga has an average literacy rate of 74 percent, higher than the national average of 59.5 percent, male literacy is 78 percent, and female literacy is 70 percent. In Shimoga, 12 percent of the population is under 6 years of age.
