Roorkee
India officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous liberal democracy in the world. India is a union of twenty-eight states and seven federally-governed union territories. New Delhi is the capital of India. Roorkee is a city and a municipal board in Haridwar District in the Indian state of Uttaranchal. It is about 180 kilometers north of the Indian capital New Delhi and located between the rivers Ganga and Yamuna. Before the creation of Uttaranchal on November 9th 2000, Roorkee was a part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. Roorkee is situated in the foothills of Himalayas and close to the cities of Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun. As of 2001 India census, Roorkee had a population of 97,064 inhabitants. The males constitute 53 percent of the population and females 47 percent. Roorkee has an average literacy rate of 76 percent, higher than the national average of 59.5 percent, male literacy is 81 percent, and female literacy is 72 percent. In Roorkee, 11 percent of the population is under 6 years of age.
