Japan is an island country in East Asia. Kobe is a municipality in Japan located on the island of Honshu. Kobe is Japan's prominent port city and the capital of Hyogo region. It was one of the first cities to open for trade with the West, as of 1868. The city is a part of the Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto metropolitan sprawl. In 2006, the population of the city was 1,528,948 and an area of 551.40 square kilometers. It is said that the port was open by the early 7th century.
