India officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous liberal democracy in the world. Katni also known as Murwara or Mudwara is a town in the banks of the Katni River in Madhya Pradesh state of central India. It is the administrative headquarters of Katni District. It is located in the Mahakoshal Region of Central India. The city is 90 kilometers away from the divisional headquarters of the region, Jabalpur. It is one of largest Railway Junctions in India. The city is famous for its abundance in lime and bauxite. Katni also possesses the Largest Rail Yard and Biggest Diesel Loco Shed in India.
 
In the field of education Katni is a frontrunner. There are more than 12 higher secondary schools in Katni city. Out of them more than 5 are affiliated to the CBSE board and provide education to upper higher secondary level like other main cities of Madhya Pradesh. There has been a sudden enhancement in higher education. A new professional college has been opened and provides master degrees in technical fields beyond the basic higher education of colleges.
 
Since the beginning of 20th Century Mudwara has been given the status of a town. The development work of the town started with the British rule. In 1998 Katni was declared as a district and the district administration was set up by the government. It was a major task for the district administration to bring Katni to maturity.
 
Katni is said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times. It enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers.
