As of 2001 India census India, Kurnool had a population of 267,739. Kurnool as a village has existed for 2000 years. The first name of kurnool was Kandenaolu, literally lubricating village. Many bullock carts which came from far-off places to dig sand in the rivers that ran on both sides of the village stopped to lubricate their wheels. This Kandenavolu became Kurnool when the British took over the town. It is the only inhabited place between two rivers. Kurnool was a major fort during the reign of the Vijayanagar emperors. There is still a grand watch tower called Konda Reddy Buruju to testify the glory it enjoyed during the reign of Vijayanagar emperors, but no one is sure about how the watch tower got its name. The British contributed much to present-day Kurnool with good schools, churches, etc. Kurnool is connected to most cities and towns in Andhra Pradesh and to Bangalore and Chennai by the state road transport corporation. National Highway 7 connects it to Hyderabad and Bangalore. For movement within Kurnool, there are private city bus services available. However, these are occasional. Auto service, which is the best service, and rickshaws are also available. Kurnool lies on the Hyderabad Bangalore railway line. There are also frequent passenger trains to Hyderabad, Delhi and Chennai. Hyderabad is the nearest airport.
