India officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous liberal democracy in the world. India is a union of twenty-eight states and seven federally-governed union territories. New Delhi is the capital of India. Hamirpur is a town and the district headquarters of Hamirpur district in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh, India. Hamirpur is located in a relatively warmer region with a lower altitude as compared to the other districts of the state. Hamirpur was created mainly as a result of trifurcation of the erstwhile Kangra district on 1st September, 1972. In 2001, the population of the city was 17,219. Males constitute 54 percent of the population and females 46 percent. Hamirpur has an average literacy rate of 81 percent, higher than the national average of 59.5 percent: male literacy is 83 percent, and female literacy is 79 percent. In Hamirpur, 10 percent of the population is under 6 years of age. Hamirpur has recently emerged as an educational hub of Himachal Pradesh.
